2.11 How do I create a new blank section?
1.1 When I post a message my name appears as something like 'Student 5019947, Demo'. How do I get it to print my name instead?
When you post the message you need to be in the Teach Tab at the top and not the Student View tab. You should be able to delete the message you have just posted, and then post a new one within the Teach Tab.
1.2 In the selective release map, what is the difference between 'VISIBLE' and 'AVAILABLE'?
Availability refers to the particular file, whilst visible/hidden refers to links to the file (i.e. a specific place in the content of module where you can see the file). So if a file only occurs in one place in the content they are equivalent, and a file can only be visible if it is available.
1.3 How do I convert a quiz to a self-test or vice versa?
Create a new assessment of the sort you want to convert your assessment to. You will beasked to 'Select whether or not you want to base this assessment on an existing assessment.' Select 'yes', and base it on the original version. Once you have created the new assessment, you can delete the old one.
1.4 How can I add my student view to a group?
Go to the Group Manager and add the Demo Student (there will be numbers after its name) to the group.
1.5 How can I set up discussion boards for lots of groups at once?
At the bottom of the Group Manager screen there is drop-down menu for activities to add to all groups selected in the Group Manager. It will create the multiple discussion boards and assign the correct release criteria.
1.6 Can I launch installed applications?
You can put files of any sort up on Vista, including executables - when a student clicks on these they will be able to run them. So if you have an executable that launches the application, then this will enable the application to be launched. Do remember though, that the application will need to be installed on the student's computer for this to work.
1.7 How do I do mathematics in HTML?
The options are basically to use the software's built-in equation editor, use HTML if you aren't doing anything too complicated, use images (with ALT tags), or to use MathML. There are pros and cons to each of these. Images with ALT tags is probably the simplest the solution - and you can produce such files using either CourseGenie or LateX2HTML.
1.8 Can I get the headers and footers of my module to access an external stylesheet?
No.
1.9 How can I move a discussion board message from one thread to another thread?
Move it to a different topic, then move it back to the topic it was in already, then you can select which thread you want message to appear in in a pop-up window.
1.10 How can I reorder everything on my home page or in an organiser?
Go to the Power View under the Build Tab.
1.11 How can I link to files in File Manager?
You can do this using the inbuilt HTML Creator. Click on the link icon (it looks like a chain) and select link type=file and then select the file from the file manager. Once you see the link in the WYSIWYG view of the creator it is worth right-mouse-button clicking on it, select properties and then click on the pencil next to target to get it to open in a new window. Alternatively you can access it using the following HTML
<a href="/webct/RelativeResourceManager/Template/filepath">Slides/algebra.ppt</a>
where 'filepath' is the path of the file in File Manager.
1.12 How can I download all my students' assignment submissions as a zip file?
In the Assignment Dropbox check several assignments. Choose 'Create Printable View' and then 'Save to File'. Return to Tool View and choose the File Manager. Select the My Files folder. You can choose to Download or Zip from here
1.13 When I try to add a content file to my section homepage, it tries to unzip the file and fail. What am I doing wrong?
You need to click on Content File on the lefthandside, not on Content Import on the top right. Rather confusing, Content Import isn't for adding content files but for importing 'content packages', specially zipped collections of content files.
1.14 I have posted an announcement but it says 'Ready' not 'Sent' next to the name of the announcement. How do I send it?
You do not need to do anything, it will automatically get sent after a couple of minutes.
2.1 It's the second year I'm running a module - how do I create a new section with the same material?
A support sheet will shortly be available from the CLD explaining how to do this.
2.2 How do I use ULearn with students who aren't members of the University of Surrey?
Contact IT Services about this with as much notice as possible.
The usual procedure for students who do not have a valid University Registration Number, and therefore do not have a computing account, is for them to be registered externally. This involves the student filling out a form and having it countersigned by the departmental computing representative.
However if it is not possible for students to pre-sign registration forms, it may be possible to provide IT Services with a list of names.
2.3 The name of my module within ULearn is wrong - what do I do?
If it is the course rather than section name that is incorrect, you need to contact IT Services. If the name of your section is incorrect, then it is probably simplest just to create a new section with the correct name.
2.4 Can I stop WebCT Vista timing out?
No. Though you can put in a request to IT Services!
2.5 When I try and enroll students/ myself I don't see the right categories - what should I do?
You need to click on the Sections button, and then the name of the section and then enrollment.
In graded tests, is it possible to see the answers that that each student
has put to each question?
[Burt P Mr (Cen for Learning De] Yes, click on the 'View Performance'
icon (looks like a bar graph) on the right in the 'Assessment Manager'
2.6 I want to show somebody else my course, how do I do this?
Just enroll them as a student on the section. You might want to make a copy of the section to show people if you have e.g. posts by students that need to be kept private.
2.7 I am working with somebody else on a course, how do I give them permission to edit files etc?
The CLD have a support sheet on setting up the permissions for this. If you are working with somebody else on a course, I'd also recommend setting up a shared directory that you can both access and keep the master copy in there. One of the school computer support staff should be able to help with this.
2.8 I have lots of people enrolled as Section Instructors because they need access but I just want students to see my name on their homepage as the section instructor. How can I do this?
Go to the course. Click on the section, then 'Enrollment' and then 'Section Instructor'. Change the setting so that you are a 'primary section instructor' but the other section instructions are not.
2.9 I want to have lots of sections running simultaneously for a course with the same content - is there any quick way of doing this?
Yes, you need to create a course template within the course and base the sections on this - I recommend that you ask for help from the CLD on doing this as it is slightly fiddly.
2.10 Can I get rid of the American spellings used in the software such as 'color'?
No. There is a 'British language pack' that it is possible to install centrally for the WebCT software, however this also changes lots of other terminology used by the software in rather odd ways, so a decision has been made centrally to not install this.
2.11 How do I create a new blank section?
Go into the course. Make sure you are on the Learning Context Manager tab and are looking under the 'Sections' heading (you may need to click 'Sections'), then click 'Create Section'.
Fill in the section name and click 'Save' (you can leave the rest of the form blank). Whatever you call the section will appear after the module name, so you want to give it a name different from the module. I suggest naming a section after the semester in which you are teaching e.g. Autumn 2005.
You should now be able to see your section under the Sections heading. Click on your section and then 'Templates'. Now click on 'Assign template to section', make sure 'Blank Template' is selected and click 'Save'.
You now need to enroll yourself as Section Instructor and Designer. You can do this by going to the 'Enrollment' tab.
Now return to your ULearn home page by clicking the link at the top right. You should be able to see the section as a separate entry on your list of ULearn modules. If you can't try logging out and back in again.
