Would you like to try Linux or Vista, but don't want to reformat your Windows XP computer? Well, now you can. The solution is a virtual environment where you can use and test new operating systems, without compromising your main operating system.

WARNING: Microsoft Vista is available for experimental purposes only. It is not guaranteed to work with the University Infrastructure, and users should install it at their own risk.
Do not install it if you need to access any of the following systems:
ULearn, OWA, AthensDA, ResNet, UniS Wireless, Campus Network Connections.
No help or support is available from either the SCS or IT Services.

MSDNAA

The Microsoft Develeper Network Academic Alliance is an annual membership program for departments in the area of Computer Science, Engineering, and Information Systems. As a member, the department's faculty and students may check-out or download Microsoft operating system and developer tools software to install on their personal computers.

How do I get this software?

The departments in this School have each setup their own software distribution website. There you can create yourself an account, choose which software you want, how you want to get the software, and how to receive an installation licence key.

You can choose to receive the software in three ways

  1. Download the software direct from the website [ Free ]

  2. Borrow a CD from the department's MSDN coordinator [ Free ] [ £5 admin for lost CDs ]

  3. Have a CD delivered to your home address from Microsoft [ for a small charge ]

NOTE: Some people are have problems using the download method. The application downloader utility is sometimes saved without a .exe extension. If this happens, rename the file to download.exe

 

Accessing the MSDNAA website.

You must choose the correct website for your department. Each department is administered (and charged) seperately.

Usage Guidelines Summary

The software provided under the MSDN Academic Alliance program may be installed on PCs to facilitate educational or non-commercial research specific to MSDNAA program software.

Students who are taking at least one course in the member department may install the software on their personal computers.

Departmental faculty members providing support for MSDNAA software may install the software on their personal computers.

The software may not be used on any computer that supports the operations of the institution such as accounting, admissions, facilities, information technology, etc.
