Internet Access for Conference Attendees
School of Electronics and Physical Sciences
The School of Electronics and Physical Sciences can provide Internet access
for attendees of conferences and courses held on behalf of the School. Attendees
are provided with individual accounts that allow restricted Internet access
for the purposes of checking remote email accounts and general access to
the web.
Facilities
Your conference account can be used to access the Internet via any or all
of the following methods. Conference or course organisers should be able
to verify the provision for your particular event.
Open net access may be available
for attendees who can bring a laptop with them:
1a. Personal Laptop (with Ethernet port or card)
A small number of 10/100Mbit wired ethernet connections
may be available in a conference meeting room. Cables will be provided.
The laptop must have a built-in RJ45 ethernet port or have a network PC-card
with RJ45 interface. An appropriate driver for your operating system must
be available or pre-installed.
1b. Personal Laptop (with WiFi Wireless)
A wireless network conforming to the 802.11b standard
may be available in a conference meeting room. The laptop must have a built-in
wireless device or any 802.11b standards-compliant wireless PC-card. An appropriate
driver for your operating system must be available or pre-installed.

2. Workstation in an Open Access lab
One or more Open access labs may have been booked by your organiser.
The workstations run Linux and the account is restricted to provide basic
access to the Internet via netscape browser only. If you need to use a particular
piece of software during your conference visit, you must bring it with you
and use it on your own laptop. There is no provision for local file storage.
Availability
Internet access via laptop is available between 09:00-17:30hrs or whenever
the conference meeting room is open. If wired access is provided, this is
available on a first-come first-served basis. Configuration details are
available here. Workstation access
is available between 08:00-20:00hrs. Access to terminals is on a first-come
first-served basis and is shared with other school staff, students and visitors.
Support
These facilities are provided on a self-support basis only. Online information
and instructions are provided but no direct IT support is available for
attendees. The infrastructure is monitored and managed during working hours
and problems will be rectified as quickly as possible. The computer support
team endeavor to ensure that networks and terminals remain operational at
all times.
Responsibility
This service is provided as-is and any failure to use the facilities
or failure through use of the facilities is the responsibility of the individual.
All network access is monitored and logged. Any unauthorised access or illegitimate
activity will result in account closure and will be reported to the appropriate
university personnel.
The computer support team reserves the right to withdraw any or all services
to conference attendees at any time and without notice.
