Open Net - Quickstart guide

This page is intended to be an all-in-one quickstart guide to using the SEPS/SCS Open network. Some technical knowledge is assumed and you should be familiar with the network configuration on your computer. See here for a full description of the Open Net and step-by-step graphical guides.
What do I need?
- A laptop with ethernet or 802.11b wireless (WiFi)
- Appropriate network and/or wireless driver for your operating system
Where can I hookup?
- Wired access
- If you are a student, red cables are available in the Open access labs. If you are staff or visitor, contact your local computer support officer. If you are a conference or course attendee, a special room may have been booked for you - details should be included with your guest account. If not, contact your event organiser.
- Wireless access
- If you are staff, student or visitor within SEPS - wireless coverage is available throughout SEPS buildings in AA, AB, BB, DJ and Nodus. Details here. If you are a conference attendee, a special room may have been booked for you - see Wired access above.
What do I do?
- Install a driver for your network hardware (if not already done)
- Configure your computer to obtain network settings via DHCP
- If using wireless, scan for networks and attach to the SCSECM01 (all caps, zero-one at the end) network. Please note thst this is an insecure network.
- Physically connect to the network using specially assigned TP cable or enter wireless coverage area
- Start your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.)
- Open any remote web page, eg. www.google.com
- A dialogue box may appear explaining that you are being redirected to a secure site. Hit OK.
- You will be redirected to the NoCat authentication page
- Read the Open Net terms and conditions of use via the authentication page
- Login to the Open Net using your University username and password
- You now have Internet access (repeat steps 6 through 9 on expiration of lease).
Common problems that need to be corrected
- Network settings are not using DHCP
- Internet Explorer is mis-configured to use dialup or another unused network interface
